In winter, you’ll often encounter little flocks of Purple Sandpipers at the Rockland Breakwater, a massive granite structure that extends nearly a mile out into the harbor. Purple Sandpipers breed in the Arctic tundra and are rarely seen—except in winter, right here along the North Atlantic coast. This bird paused politely for a portrait.
