On a frigid January afternoon, with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees (F), I hiked clear to the summit of Beech Hill without seeing or hearing a single bird. Just as I thought I’d strike out, I happened to glance up at the tip of a spruce, and there, between the moon and me, sat a solitary Merlin.
