The American Woodcock is common hereabouts. I consider its arrival in mid-March, when I first hear its miraculous twilight flight song, the surest portent of spring. But I could never seem to manage a decent photograph of this bird—until May 2013, when I encountered this one sitting in a patch of grass at the summit of Beech Hill.
